With spring break and summer vacation approaching quickly, students have to think about what to do with their new free time. A basic, but enjoyable, idea is to go camping with family or friends. Camping is a great way to get away from technology and the busy everyday life. You can’t simply “go camping” without any ideas, so here is a list of interesting things to do to make the best of camping.

Relaxing activities/sports:

  • Kayaking
    • Kayaking is a lot easier than most people think and it’s a great way to relax on the water.
  • Archery
    • The closest archery range is in Wickham Park and sometimes it’s a hassle to drive there, so find an archery range near your campsite and practice shooting arrows.
  • Horseback riding
    • Go to a nearby ranch to rent a horse for a peaceful ride through a woodland trail.
  • Fishing or just casting the rod
    • Fishing is a great way to absorb the nature around you, especially if you just practice casting the fishing rod.

Amusing ways to absorb the nature around you:

  • See animals at a wildlife refuge
    • Going to a wildlife refuge near your campsite is a great way to pass the time and see animals up close without having to push through crowds like at a zoo.
  • Photograph or sketch nature
    • There’s no need for a certain talent to take pictures or sketch interesting things you see. It’s great to keep memories of fun trips to look back on in the future.

Delicious food recipes to try:

  • Make homemade mini pies with fresh, hand picked strawberries
    • There isn’t a specific recipe for mini strawberry pies, but the basics are: Go strawberry picking, cook the strawberries with a mix of sugar and cinnamon, or other preferred spices, and wrap large spoonfuls of it in dough.
  • Campfire with smores
    • Get creative with different smores mixtures. You can include bacon, Reese’s, cookies, and whatever else comes to mind.
  • Make breakfast on bunsen burners
    • Bunsen burners are a great way to cook food without having to bring equipment that take up space or is difficult to assemble. All you need is a large tin can, a lighter, a candle, and aluminum foil to act as a bowl. You only need to take off the wrapping on the tin can, cut a large rectangle on the bottom of the open side, and put a lighted candle inside.
  • Roast cinnamon rolls over fire
    • Since it won’t be easy to cook cinnamon rolls without a proper stove, get a stick for roasting marshmallows, rip the cinnamon roll into pieces, poke the stick through the cinnamon rolls, and begin roasting as you would with marshmallows. You may need to rewrap the cinnamon roll until it’s cooked. Don’t forget to put cinnamon and/or frosting on the cinnamon rolls when they’re done.

Easy ways to sit back or pass the time:

  • Stargaze with a telescope or without one and look at constellations
    • Bring a telescope or go without one to an open area or field. Make sure there aren’t clouds.
  • Paint on rocks
    • It’s a great way to relax and clear your head after setting up a tent or while you wait for dinner.
  • Whittle sticks
    • Another great way to clear your head and you don’t need to look very far for a stick. Make sure you know how to whittle before attempting something with a knife.
